We are a young active medical team interested in wide range of cardiovascular diseases. However, our main scientific focus are various diverse aspects of venous thromboembolic disease including acute pulmonary embolism and its late sequel chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

Our department is located in the very heart of Warsaw, at Infant Jesus Teaching Hospital, one of the oldest Warsaw hospitals, undoubtedly a primary source of academic medicine in Warsaw. We represent a unique combination of long-lasting tradition with a modern approach to contemporary medical challenges.

We are situated in the center of Warsaw at Infant Jesus Teaching Hospital located at Lindleya St.

The Department of Internal Medicine & Cardiology with the Centre for Management of Venous Thromboembolic Disease is a modern, highly specialized 39-bed heart centre with a 12-bed cardiac intensive care unit. Yearly approximately 2.500 patients are treated, among them over 200 with acute pulmonary embolism or chronic cardiopulmonary conditions such as chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and pulmonary hypertension associated with connective tissue disease. Our clinic runs a leading centre for the management of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which aims at providing care for patients with acute pulmonary embolism (APE) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT).

The clinic is divided into the cardiology ward, general and geriatrics ward, cardiac intensive care unit, as well as laboratories and out-patient clinics specializing in the ambulatory treatment of patients with VTE, diabetes, and hypertension.

The staff is involved in educational and scientific work in the field of internal diseases and cardiology, with special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism utilizing not only pharmacological methods, but also state-of-the-art invasive treatment such as balloon pulmonary angioplasty. Yearly, post-graduate courses on echocardiography and electrocardiography are organized. An annual conference for general practitioners takes place in the spring.

Our research interest expand to CTEPH, a rare sequel of APE. Our clinic offers a complete array of both diagnostic and treatment options for CTEPH patients. Invasive procedures are performed using advanced techniques (intravascular ultrasound, optical coherent tomography, pulmonary pressure ratio reserve) aimed at increasing safety and efficacy. Our cath-lab also specializes in the invasive treatment of coronary artery disease, with special emphasis on patients with impaired kidney function.

After hospitalization, patients with confirmed VTE are followed-up in the designated out-patient clinic.

Another field of interest are the cardiovascular complications of connective tissue disease, neuromuscular disorders (BMD, myotonic dystrophy t1 and t2, Andersen-Tawil syndrome), diabetes, metabolic syndrome, morbid obesity, chronic kidney failure, and last but not least cardiovascular health of the elderly. We also work with transplant surgeons in preparing patients for organ transplants.
